SINERGIA 39
“I think – we and it was a personal achievement because merit goes to all the people who were working with me at the time set up a system which is still used today at Mota-Engil to control production and for planning. At the time (1993-94) this was a very diferent system, so to speak, than those commonly used in the construction area.”
Linked to production control since he joined the Group, by 2003 he was Director General of the Technical Support area of Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção.
Transition to Tertir
After having worked for 15 years in the Engineering and Construction area he is invited to tackle a new challenge: to head the Tertir Group. “It was Gonçalo Moura Martins, whom I know back from the days at the constructing company, that challenged me when the possibility of acquiring Tertir arose at Mota-Engil Ambiente e Serviços”.
At the time he was already part of the "furniture", living in his comfort area which, according to him, “is not always a good idea”. Although he got on very well with everyone working in Engineering and Construction and loved what he did, after careful thought he decided that it would do him good “to change activity, to understand that there are other businesses, that there are other areas”.
Tertir was acquired in 2007 and its management was integrated within the scope of the development strategy of the Mota-Engil Group and its head envisioned the development of Tertir in port operations in container terminals.
Eduardo Pimentel says that the “aspect that they most want to develop is the port operation area in which we have already been leaders in Portugal”. Handling around 80% of the containers that circulate in Portugal, “we can’t grow more here”.
This way, operating in Peru (via the Paita port) and in Spain (via the recently attributed concession in Ferrol), he considers that “the Tertir project must encompass the internationalisation of the port operations activity where the Group is already operating”. As an example he referred that it is his wish to operate a container terminal in Angola and also in Brazil.
In addition to the focus on terminals in Angola, Brazil and Mozambique, regions “where we want to develop and increase Tertir's business”, Eduardo Pimentel stressed that they do not wish “to overlook our area in rail transport which is growing in Portugal and has been a project which has taught us a lot, similarly to the freight forwarders area”.
“It was Gonçalo Moura Martins, whom I know back from the days at the constructing company, that challenged me when the possibility of acquiring Tertir arose at Mota-Engil Ambiente e Serviços”.
