MOTA‐ENGIL IN THE HIGH‐SPEED LINE IN SPAIN
THE WORK IN THE LEÓN SECTION WILL ENABLE REDUCING THE TRAVEL TIME BY TRAIN BETWEEN MADRID AND ASTÚRIAS.

This work is another large project of MEEC that will improve the city of León, since the current railways will be under the ground, returning space to the city, creating green areas and walkways on the surface.
M ota‐Engil is currently working on the works for Special
Foundations in the railway line connecting Madrid to Astúrias, in the León section. The “Integración del
Ferrocarril en León – Fase I” project, amounting to €1,300,000 for Mota‐Engil Engenharia e Construção (MEEC) – Spain Branch, is, so far, the largest moulded walls work carried out by the Foundation Department.
The works feature the execution of over 1,600 metres of Iberian‐gauge railway line, the execution of tunnels for the underground placement of 500 metres of railway lines, the rehabilitation and expansion of the León Station, as well as the construction of multiple access ramps and of the entire pedestrian walkway between Palencia Avenue and Dr. Fleming Avenue. To meet
the contracted deadlines, the work eventually included four simultaneous cranes.
In total, for the railway to go underground, 31,600 m2 of moulded walls will be executed (521 panels with thicknesses of 0.60 m, 0.80 m and 1.0 m) along 1.10 km. In addition to the moulded walls, three pillars with a diameter of 1,500 mm and over 30 metres of depth will be built, with subsequent placement of centring structures and a metallic Ø800‐mm pillar, which requires major thorough work.
The Work’s Director, Pedro Antunes, pointed out that it is necessary to “carry out a series of tests in accordance with the regulations in force in Spain and throughout Europe, including tests of  uid density, viscosity, sand content, pH, etc. According to the standard, before each casting, certain parameters must be met and we thus must ensure that the bentonite is made correctly and presents the appropriate conditions to be inserted in the perforations and be suited to stabilise the drilling walls”.
