 and our main customer, the Mozambican Government, was greatly affected, so it is time to show solidarity.”
Mota‐Engil mobilised equipment, technical and human resources to
carry out interventions in isolated populations. In Mocuba, in the province of Zambezia, Mota‐Engil Mozambique allocated the means necessary for the recovery of roads from the outset.
At the same time, the Manuel António da Mota Foundation contributed with a donation in kind, in association with a national initiative promoted from Maputo by the Port of Maputo (MPDC) and by the CTA (Confederation of
Economic Associations), which consisted of the collection of non‐perishable foodstuffs, hygiene products, mosquito nets and other basic necessities, an objective that was achieved with the shipment of 14‐tonne containers that were transported by sea from Maputo
to the city of Beira.
In Mozambique, Aníbal Leite (Executive Director Mota‐Engil Africa and Market CEO) and Paulo Pereira (Market
CFO), together with the teams in the field, provided support to the local communities that were affected, with the following interventions standing out:
NUMBERS OF THE CATASTROPHE
IMPACT OF THE IDAI
AND KENNETH CYCLONES:
• Over 600 dead;
• 1.8 million people
in need of assistance;
• Destruction of over 200 thousand homes;
• Destruction of essential transportation infrastructures, especially in Sofala (corresponding to 42% of the country’s entire network), and Manica, with three bridges.
PROVINCES OF ZAMBEZIA AND MANICA:
1. Work in the water collection area and for the recovery
of the access to the pumping station;
2. Supply of drinking water to the population since April, with its maintenance expected to be necessary until October.
IN DOMBE:
1. Road N520 – Dombe – Gonda(N1) section:
Regularisation/repair of the road, making it usable.
2. Road N260 – Dombe – Espungabera section:
Removal of vegetation/debris and normalisation of the road between Dombe and the bridge over the Mussapa river;
Execution of a temporary crossing on the bridge
of the Lucite river to allow the temporary circulation of goods and people;
Construction of the bridge’s abutments on both sides
of the river (they had been destroyed), thus restoring the definitive connection between the population;
Reestablishment of access over the Buzi river.
3. Road N260 – Dombe – Sussundenga section:
Normalisation of the road between Dombe and Chimokono;
Clearing of vegetation/debris obstructing the road – Chimanimani Reserve.
4. Accommodation of displaced people:
Support in the construction of an area to house displaced people.
Support to renew school supplies.
