CONSORTIUM HEADED BY THE MOTA-ENGIL GROUP BUILDS THE FOZ TUA DAM

The 18 th of February marked the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction works of the Foz Tua dam, in Trás-os-Montes, by a consortium led by the Mota-Engil Group and which also includes Somague and MSF. Approximately 160 million euros will be invested in this construction.

The ceremony counted with the presence of the Prime-Minister, José Socrates and António Mota, Chairman of the Board represented theMota-Engil Group.

The Foz Tua dam is expected to start producing energy in 2015. It lies in the lower part of River Tua, where the Carrazeda de Ansiães and Alijó municipalities merge,

near River Douro, covering the Alijó and Murça municipalities, in the Vila Real District, and Mirandela, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Vila Flor, in the District of Bragança.

The concrete wall, double curvature arch type shall be 108 meters high and with 275 meters of crest, about a kilometre from the mouth of River Tua.

It also has a food spillway integrated in the dam equipped with foodgates, a bottom outlet and a device for delivery of ecological fow.

The dam station will be underground in pit on the right bank, around 500 metres

downstream from the dam, and a release and control building will be located on the surface.

The Foz Tua dam comprises the National Plan for Dams and the 12 EDP hydropower projects totaling 3500 MW and implying 76% of increased capacity when compared to the Group’s current hydroelectric park.
