AWARD

Engenharia “nominated” for the Mies Van Der Rohe

2011 Award

D. Diogo de Menezes Square

The pavement area of the car park at the Cascais Citadel, which is now D. Diogo de Menezes Square, has been nominated for the European Union Award for Contemporary Architecture - the Mies van der Rohe 2011.

The main distinctive feature of this underground structure redeveloped by Mota-Engil Engenharia lies in the set of slanted planes built for the roofng and the white cement concrete facing.

Designed by Architect Miguel Arruda, this car park construction features are fairly diferent from those used for similar structures; indeed the building had to

mesh in with the Cascais Citadel wall and the urban surroundings. Besides a 10,000 m 2 white cement concrete facing, Mota-Engil Engenharia executed the foundations and fnishings of this building.

The Mies van der Rohe Prize is a biannual prize awarded by the European Union to recognize and distinguish excellence in architecture design work including technical and aesthetical features. The projects are assessed by an independent panel of experts and the Association of European Architects.
