CAMPAIGN AIMS AT INVERTING slip and fall STATISTICS

Safety at work

Mota-Engil Engenharia invested in an awareness campaign that, in addition to other measures, consisted in the display of a poster at all company work sites and quarries. The initiative aims at prevent falls at the same level, responsible for the largest number of occupational accidents in the frst half of 2011.

The importance of walkways as well as the establishment of spaces with controlled conditions for safe circulation in order to prevent, for instance, objects from falling on persons or being hit by a vehicle or a machine are some of the measures to be taken into account.

It must however be highlighted that all parties involved must make

an efort: the project supervisor is responsible for planning the walkways, the manager is responsible for implementing them and maintaining them and the workers will use them and comply with standards.

TUA BRIDGE BUILT 140 Metres above THE RIVERBED

Central span completed The closure of the central span of the Tua bridge, which was completed in December 2011, is considered one of the most important milestones of this project, integrated in lot 6 of the Douro Interior Concession. The bridge is intended to overcome the Tua river in an area where the latter is rather caved-in, resulting in a road route crossing at a height of 140 metres above the riverbed. Crossing the Tua railway line and with

the construction of the future Foz do Tua dam, the bridge will overlook the lagoon.

The platform will comprise a 14.6 m wide single deck and a 7 m lane in each direction. The two 1.3 m sidewalks will feature a metal safety structure and a screen to protect against the wind. The completion of lot 6 is scheduled for late April this year.
