february 2012
Enhancing existing skills, Mota-Engil Peru materialized important developments to achieve such goal throughout 2011. The current engineering areas in use will allow the company to strengthen its market share, by operating in segments of public works, construction and real Estate, reinsuring the quality of the Mota-Engil brand for the Market, its customers and partners.
Apart from the engineering and construction areas, Mota-Engil Peru has also introduced new business segments into the Peruvian market, namely the concession of Porto de Paita, the country’s second largest concession. Under the management of Tertir, a local company to which Mota-Engil Peru is associated, it promotes intragroup synergy in construction-concession logic.
SUMA started its activity in May 2011, as well as Mota-Engil Energia, which is currently developing with Mota-Engil Peru the study of hydropower in the country, a similar procedure to the one developed by Ascendi, in as far as transport concession projects are concerned.
Another relevant fact which took place in 2011 was that the frst agreement ever celebrated by Mota-Engil Indústria e Inovação was signed in Peru.
As Mota-Engil Indústria e Inovação targeted to support the internationalisation of Portuguese SMEs using venture capital logic and with the support of local structures of the Group, the frst embodiment of this project stresses the availability and enterprise commitment to the strategic drivers of Mota-Engil.
The future of Mota-Engil Peru
In 2010 and 2011 Peru was one of the fastest growing geographic areas in its activity in the Group, increasing the number of employees from a 1000 in 2009 to about 5000 in 2011. This growth contributed toward the boost of the Latin America region as one of the most dynamic markets in recent years of the Mota-Engil Group.
Thus, Mota-Engil Peru is treading the path of the main strategic guidelines of the “Ambition 2013” plan, which is to replicate the business model of Mota-Engil in each market, by diversifying the activity within the existing competences in the Group and contributing, by developing intra-group synergies, to promote new opportunities for the various subsidiaries of Mota-Engil.
Mota-Engil is an example in the internationalization of the Group.
Arnaldo Figueiredo, Mota-Engil Indústria e Inovação:
The business model of Mota-Engil Indústria e Inovação is based, among other factors, on the added-value provided by the support of local structures of the Group in the process of internationalisation of frms selected to be supported. The fact that the company’s frst project was developed in Peru is a clear demonstration of the excellent support structure and the people of Mota-Engil Peru, including the Rui Guimarães and Nuno Figueiredo, who were unsurpassed in the implementation of the Solargus project in this market
Pedro Montalvão, Mota-Engil Energia:
The Mota-Engil Peru team has given a very important support from the outset in the development of hydroelectric development studies. We currently have two staf members working permanently in Peru, one of Peruvian nationality and the other Portuguese, and both were very well-received and supported by everyone at Mota-Engil Peru. This is a substantial advantage relative to our industry partners, some of which, not having a local presence, feel very motivated to establish and strengthen partnerships with Mota-Engil.
Paulo Moutinho Neves, TERTIR:
The participation of Mota-Engil Peru in the Paita project was crucial for the success of Tertir in that market. Without such support it would’ve been very difcult, if not impossible, for the Mota-Engil Group, through Tertir, to be awarded the concession of the second largest port in Peru, one year after its frst commercial visit to the country in April 2008. The support provided by Mota-Engil Peru was critical to avoid possible mistakes, setbacks and wasted resources that may at all-time occur in a geographical diversifcation such as the one that Tertir has underway. They helped by identifying potential local partners and institutional contacts of a wide range of levels, by sharing knowledge about the legal and labor frameworks and the business environment in the country in general. This internal synergy was more efciently achieved due to the relevant shareholder stake of Mota-Engil Peru in 10% of the capital of the concessionaire, and the subsequent award of a work for the expansion of the port worth over USD 100 million.
Rui Cruz, Chariman of Solargus:
(Partner of ME Indústria e Inovação in Peru)
If we take an outside look at Mota-Engil Peru, there is something that we can “sense” once we walk in: optimism. It is a very well managed structure. I believe it combines all the relevant features needed to become one of the best companies in Peru, that is if it isn’t already.
