and for small and medium-sized
businesses were drawn.
According to Diogo da Silveira,
Chairman of the Açoreana's Executive
Committee, “these numbers reflect the
awakening of Portuguese companies
to the importance and impact that
risk management can have in the
optimisation of the results for an
organisation”.
In the case of SUMA, the company deals
with the treatment and management
of waste which implies a constant
exposure to risk from the complexity of
the material collected and the treatment
process as well as in the collection
itself which can therefore be subject to
innumerable accidents at work.
Aware of the context in which its
business is carried on, SUMA – Serviços
Urbanos e Meio Ambiente SA (Urban and
Environmental Services) has minimised
the hazards over the past 20 years by the
use of training plans for its employees
(including accident prevention) and
the maturity and awareness of the
local population (environmental and
behavioural awareness).
The results achieved were deserving
of the Special Confidence Mention of
Honour in recognition of the best practice
implemented by the organisation.
SUMA received the Special Confidence

Management
