MOTA-ENGIL IN THE WORLD
SINERGIA 44
support from and the presence of the
largest local concession holder which
is Odinsa, a subsidiary of Bancolombia,
itself a major financial institution
together with the majority of Colombian
construction companies in the top 10 and
which have an extensive knowledge of
the market which, we believe, gives us
an important competitive advantage”.
The role of Mota-Engil, he considers,
“will make a difference to the
partnerships due to the experience and
the technology which we bring to the
table such as in the field of floorings,
in ITS and in toll-road management
solutions. These are all added values
which we have just as our partners
bring theirs”.
In the field of major viaducts and public
works and dams, Alexandre Bernardo
emphasises that, by deciding entering
the Colombian market, Mota-Engil
has created opportunities for several
Portuguese projects practices which
are already at work on these. “With
Portuguese project designers in the
established partnerships as well as in
new contracts, we bring experience and
acknowledged skills. We have brought
Portuguese engineering to the table”.
SUPPORT FROM PORTUGAL
AND FROM LATIN AMERICA
As the Group’s most recent initiative in
the Latin American region, Alexandre
Bernardo was asked about the support
received from other Group markets to
which he replied that “the operational
support from Portugal has been
fundamental as has support in legal and
sales terms which has been significant and
untiring and has helped us to find solutions
which – although difficult at times – let
us participate in public as well as private
tenders where we have submitted bids”.
In the case of Latin America, local
synergies have been very important in the
submission of bids to potential local clients,
Paita being an important framework for
recognising the merit and the capacity
for the execution of contracts by Mota-
Engil in the region and which has made a
favourable contribution to the decision to
award us the contract for the Buenaventura
container terminal.
He also added that “in Colombia it is of
vital importance to demonstrate that we
are currently carrying out both port and
mining infrastructure contracts in Peru
and that we have won and are investing in
road concessions in Mexico.”
Finally, he recognised the high degree
of proximity between each of those
responsible for Latin American markets
which at all levels represents a major
factor allowing integrated solutions to
be found which aid the achievement of
a common objective. As an example he
quoted the recent posting of a technical
sales representative from Mota-Engil Peru
to work in the Colombian market which
is important not only at the management
level which has always existed such as
that between Carlos Mota Santos and João
Parreira, but also at an operational level as
we have seen.
After this interview, we would like to thank
the Mota-Engil Colombia team and wish
them all the best.
“In Colombia it is of vital
importance to demonstrate
that we are currently
carrying out both port
and mining infrastructure
contracts in Peru and that we
have won and are investing
in road concessions
in Mexico.”
