Freixeda do Torrão Waste Water Treatment Plant, municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo – Compact Waste Water Treatment Plant with drying beds for 20 years

Manvia is currently securing the operation and maintenance of 81 wastewater sanitation systems that serve diferent places in the municipal districts of Almeida, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Gouveia, Guarda, Meda, Penamacor, Pinhel and Sabugal, as part of a service agreement signed with Águas do Zêzere e Coa, S.A. (AdZC).

These systems include 35 Pumping Stations and 81 Wastewater Treatment

Plants (WWTPs), of which 75 carry out treatment of secondary level wastewater and 6 provide complementary third level treatment consisting of disinfection by ultraviolet radiation.

The secondary treatment systems that exist are macrophyte flters (implemented in 57WWTPs), conventional fxed biomass systems – percolating flters (implemented in 4 WWTPs), and biomass suspension – activated sludge (implemented in 20 WWTPs).

The WWTPs that use macrophytic flter systems serve a population of around 100 inhabitants, while the WWTPs that use activated sludge or percolating flters serve a population of between 182 (Compact Systems) and 6736 inhabitants.

The operation and maintenance of the sanitation systems mobilizes a set of human resources (11 employees) and materials that seek to guarantee the full functioning of the equipment and treatment bodies, with the goal of:

Guaranteeing the fulflment of the quality objectives established for the wastewater treated in each treatment installation, as established by the legislation in force and the licensing bodies;

Ensure the capacity of fow of fumes generated in the area served by each system, through pumping infrastructures upstream from each WWTP;

Guarantee the full functioning of the electrical and electromagnetic equipment and the good state of repair of the installations, including any green spaces;

Ensure the management of the residues in a way that permits they are correctly packaged in the installations and subsequently sent to the licensed destination;

Implement an information system through the defnition of routines for recording the activities and respective results, and efective control of the information generated;

Minimize operating costs and maintain environmental costs inherent to each sanitation system.

This service provision involves a multidisciplinary team in constant communication with the AdZC, through the presentation of monthly exploration reports, presentation of proposals for improvement, and notifcation of occurrences and emergencies.
