AGGREGATES DEPARTMENT AT ALTO TÂMEGA’S ELECTRICITY GENERATION SYSTEM
UNIT EXECUTED WORKS IN THE HYDROELECTRIC PROJECTS OF GOUVÃES AND ALTO TÂMEGA.
At the beginning of the year, the Aggregates Department of Mota‐Engil Engenharia
e Construção completed the contract for the excavation and containment of the surge tank from level 908 m to level 830 m of the Gouvães Hydroelectric Project, for a total value of 2.5 million euros.
With a diameter of 25 m, this surge
tank represents an excavation volume of 30,000 m3, with the excavation and containment being carried out using the cul‐de‐sac construction method, with an estimated completion time of 8 months.
This year, the contract for the excavation and containment of the galleries connecting the elevator shaft to the body of the Alto Tâmega Hydroelectric Project’s dam was also awarded and completed for a total value of 670 thousand euros.
This work included the execution of three galleries of reduced section, with the following dimensions: gallery A with a section of 7.7 m2 and a length of 80 m; gallery B with a section of 7.7 m2 and length of 45 m; and finally gallery C with a section 5.5 m2 and a length of 8 m.
Both works took place on a continuous basis, i.e., 24 hours/day for five days
a week.
This infrastructure is integrated in
the Alto Tâmega electricity generation system, which represents one of the largest hydroelectric projects carried out in Europe, with the installed power of the complex generating an annual production of 1,800 gigawatt hours (GWh), equivalent to 4% of Portugal’s consumption.
